Roof moss quickly deteriorates asphalt shingle roofs. The moss prevents water from draining properly towards the gutters and instead directs it through flashings, vents, and other roof openings to get underneath the shingles and wet the plywood sheeting underneath. Exposed nail heads and other roof imperfections have magnified negative effects on the roof due to all the extra moisture resting over the shingles.
Moss can also lift the shingles to break the tar seal holding them down risking more wind damage during the winter storms. Finally, as it grows, the moss roots and other plants that latch on can eat away at the shingle materials.
How to treat?
After the bulk of the moss has been fully removed; the best practices are to keep the roof clean of debris from trees, and to apply a chemical treatment every year to prevent moss, algae, lichen, and mold from growing.
Our Process:
1. Moss is removed using specialized hand tools that will take the moss off the edges of the shingles, special care is taken to remove any moss and organic matter collected around vents and skylights. This method helps protect the shingles from excess loss of granules during the process. We do not use pressure washers to remove the moss.
2. The gutters are given a thorough cleaning, downspouts are checked and unclogged. The surrounding property is cleaned to collect the moss that has fallen down from the roof and it is bagged, and hauled away for composting.
3. Finally, our chemical spray treatment is applied. We use a specialized ammonium-based, phosphate free solution that has been engineered and tested to be the best chemical for cleaning shingled roofs without harming any surrounding plants and animals.
